Some tortures are physical
And some are mental,
But the one that is both
Is dental
.”
(Ogden Nash)

As Ogden Nash so succinctly puts it, dental problems can prove to be such a torture, both of the mind and the body. And unless you give due care to your dental apparatus you are inviting serious trouble that will hamper your health. Reason enough for everyone to practice safe oral hygiene and learn how to be in the prime of dental health.

What is Dental Hygiene?

Dental hygiene includes all the processes for keeping the mouth clean and healthy. It involves taking good care of your teeth, gums and the related structures of the mouth. Good dental hygiene is necessary for the prevention of dental caries, periodontal diseases, bad breath and other dental problems. Proper dental health is not only important to our healthy physical looks; it is essential to the well being of the entire body.

Dental Hygiene Habits

It is important to get into a regular habit of good dental hygiene. The three main steps in maintaining good dental hygiene are tooth brushing, flossing teeth, and visiting your dentist regularly. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day, with a soft-tufted brush and fluoride paste is a basic way of keeping oral problems at bay. Floss after brushing at least once a day, and by the way twice a day would be just fine. Cleaning the tongue and rinsing with mouthwash too can keep your mouth free of germs. Eating a well balanced healthy diet is also important. Limit the amount of sugary foods and drinks that you have for these are the things that bacteria thrive on leading to tooth decay. And last but not the least, be regular with your dentist, he is the man who can for sure make you smile more.

Child Dental Care

As with all other aspects of health, children need to be specially attended to in case of dental hygiene too. Good dental hygiene habits should begin before your child’s first tooth comes in. Wiping your baby’s gums with a soft damp cloth after feedings helps to prevent the buildup of bacteria. When teeth appear, start using a soft children’s toothbrush twice a day.

Simple But Effective Dental Care Steps

These are simple yet easy steps that can do a lot in making you a healthy human being. Still, people suffer due to sheer laziness and lack of knowledge towards proper dental care, with mostly the children and at times adults who often do not pay enough attention to teeth care. Observing these basics is the answer. Do it and the difference is there to be experienced.
